India Unveils National AI Mission: Rs 10,000 Crore Investment to Build Indigenous Large Language Models and Compute Infrastructure

New Delhi, India: The Indian government has officially launched the National Artificial Intelligence Mission, committing Rs 10,000 crore to build sovereign AI capabilities that reduce dependence on foreign large language models while establishing India as a global leader in ethical, inclusive artificial intelligence development.

The mission encompasses three strategic pillars: development of indigenous foundation models trained on India's linguistic and cultural diversity, establishment of a 10,000 GPU national compute facility accessible to researchers and startups, and creation of a comprehensive AI talent development program targeting 100,000 skilled practitioners by 2027.

Unlike existing models predominantly trained on English-centric datasets, India's sovereign AI initiative prioritizes multilingual capabilities across all 22 scheduled languages. The first indigenous large language model, designed specifically for Indian legal, agricultural, healthcare, and governance contexts, is expected to enter beta testing within 18 months.

The national compute infrastructure will democratize access to high-performance AI training resources, which have traditionally been concentrated among a handful of global technology giants. Indian startups, academic institutions, and government research labs will be able to access GPU clusters at subsidized rates.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar highlighted the mission's significance: 'India cannot be a passive consumer of AI built elsewhere. We must develop our own capabilities that reflect our values, languages, and priorities. This mission ensures that AI serves Indian citizens and Indian interests.'

The initiative has already attracted participation from India's leading technology institutes, including IITs and IISc, as well as major domestic cloud providers who are partnering to build the compute backbone. International semiconductor and cloud computing firms have also expressed interest in contributing to the mission's infrastructure goals.
